“REPLACE YOUR DIVOTS: Slogan to live by”

Artist Krista Charles, or X-A, first began sketching matchbooks using a collection of vintage matches that she found in her father-in-law’s junk drawer. For each piece she looks up the business address on Google maps and, on the inside cover of the book, she sketches whatever is currently at that location.

As companies and landscapes change or endure, Krista’s art becomes a study of both the continuity and the transience of life. Revealed in something so intimate, small, and ordinary as a matchbook, her work stands as an homage to the unseen individuals behind these scenes, and to the unsung events that never make the history books, but that have a major impact on the day-to-day lives of many.
