I have just spent a good hour scrolling through Paperiaarre’s blog looking at these stunning matchboxes. Paperiaarre is Finnish for “paper treasure,” and what jewels these miniature installations are! Each is handcrafted by Finnish artist and master bookbinder Kaija Rantakari, out of materials that are “within arms reach.” Nothing is pre-bought, nor does she rummage through a large stash to find just the right element. Rather her process is completely serendipitous, which I think makes the results even more wondrous. As varied as they are beautiful, these precious gems run the gamut from poignant to witty, haunting to sweet. There is also something so archetypal about these works. They’re like little secrets tucked into your pocket. Your own personal, portable piece of art, designed to inspire where ever you go.
