The work pictured here is by Ronald Ceuppens, one of my absolute favorite artists. A nature lover and award winning graphic artist from Belgium, Ceuppens immortalizes the animals he encounters in these graceful etchings. To me, he perfectly captures their characters, and then often adds an extra element to further their story: a tragic red thread to stag, a comical crown to a baby bird. (“Just what does he think he’s king of anyways?”) The mix media is powerful, intriguing. The animals stately and serene. But the “dirty” wash of the etchings speak of some kind of violence or disruption. (Man’s?) The protest is quiet, however, just like nature itself.
