scenes from the weekend, part 1: white christmas magic

December 19, 2011

This weekend the Christmas spirit descended in full. First, our good friends Tilly and Audrey and Al arrived from San Francisco for the holidays. Then we got our first real snow!

I love how snow does wonderful things both outside and in. The drama of the wind mixed with the delicacy of falling snow. The crisp coat of white that blends all objects into one. And the way the reflected light makes a house take on a whole new feeling of.. what exactly? Freshness and renewal mixed with cosy comfort? Whatever it is, it makes a weekend of friends, food and Christmas all the more magical.

I loved the photographs of the children making their pine cone ornaments. The light had that particular white clarity which is true snow-light and brings back memories of many winters in New England. And that familiar kitchen sink, black slate and the white frozen panes of glass – thank you for such evocative images.
I thought of ‘designskool’ today when I went to the shop ‘Egg’ in Kinnerton Street in London,a shop your blog readers would love. As I entered the door there was a simple ivory wax pillar candle burning on the windowsill, surrounded by a little pool of dark brown leaves so dark and rich they’d almost turned to humus. You could not ask for a less expensive, or lovelier way to set off a burning candle. Keep up the good work!
